The news comes as national figures, released in data from a Freedom of Information request, showed the number of £70 penalty charges awarded in the past three years for parking on zig zag lines had increased by 93 per cent, from 14,564 in 2011 to 28,169 in 2013.

Figures from Arun District Council, which enforces the TROs put in place by West Sussex County Council, also show a rise.
