STEYNING UP FOR THE CUP

A SECOND-HALF double by Paul McMichael grabbed Steyning the Vernon-Wentworth Cup at a soggy Woodside Road on Tuesday evening.

In a game that did much to enhance the reputation of intermediate level football, both sides cast aside anxiety and produced an enjoyable game in watery conditions.

The game went ahead only after referee Sean Gibney had inspected the pitch, and survived a downpour midway through the second half.

McMichael gave Steyning the lead on 59 minutes, when Simon Price's right-wing corner was left unchallenged and McMichael stole in to head home from 12 yards.
