Siggy back on song for Rooks' big push

GOOD news for the Rooks is that Jean-Michel Sigere has shaken off the bout of flu that affected his performance in Saturday's 2-1 win at Weston-super-Mare.

Lewes manager Steve King said: 'Siggy was out there but we had to take him off after 60 minutes as he was nowhere near himself, but he seems alright now.

'Thankfully he hasn't got the mumps that affected Amos Foyewa, Max Hustwick and Jay Lovett. Max and Jay were returning to training this week and Amos came on as sub on Saturday but needs to build himself up.

'He came on for Manny Omoyinmi, who was also a substitute but lasted only ten minutes before he got a calf muscle injury.

'Robbie Kember has a slight hamstring problem but should be okay for Saturday's game with Dorchester and Mark Wright will be available to play.

'I think we were comfortable against Weston though they should have scored in the first minute.

'We then had a goal disallowed '“ I'm told the ball was over the byline before Jamie Cade put it in for Kirk Watts to net '“ then Leon Legge missed a free header from six yards which was the best chance of the match.

'Leon and Steve Robinson played well in a solid back four with Dean Hooper and Mark Wright and Weston were restricted to long-range efforts most of the time.

'Their penalty award had us flabbergasted, it hit Robbo full in the chest.'

King, who has been handed a four-match touchline ban and fine for two sendings-off this season, went on: 'The referee (William Bull) actually had a decent game. He admitted it when he made a mistake and came over and told us. I like that.'

The Rooks had a narrow squeak early against Weston when Justin Pritchard's flick sent Lewis Hogg in with only goalkeeper Paul Wilkerson to beat but he fired wide.

Jarman cleared Mo Harkin's header from the goalline and the Cade effort was ruled out.

Lewes took the lead on 33 minutes when Siggy turned back Hooper's effort across goal and Cade nipped in to score from close in.

Substitute Luke Fontana got into the action for the Rooks's second goal on 89 minutes. The striker's first touch was not a good one but his momentum took him into a 50-50 with home goalkeeper Stuart Jones who brought him down. Harkin fired in the spotkick.

At the other end Weston were awarded a free-kick which Scott Walker fired in and Robinson was adjudged to have handled. Walker converted the penalty.

King concluded: 'We're now coming to what I consider the run-in and they will all be hard games, everyone is beating everyone.

'Our target is 70 points to reach the playoffs, and if we achieve it I just hope we will be allowed to play in them.'

Lewes: Wilkerson, Hooper, Wright, Robinson, Legge, Kennett, Harkin, Kember, Cade (Fontana), Sigere (Omoyinmi, Foyewa), Watts. Unused subs: Gomis, Beckford.

Justin Keeler (12 league goals) and Matt Groves (eight) are the Dorchester men to watch at the Dripping Pan tomorrow in a match that promises goals.

Both clubs are on the same 46 points, with Lewes scoring 53 goals and conceding 40 this season, while Dorchester have bagged 44 and let in 45.

The reverse game at Dorchester in November played in teeming rain ended in a 2-2 draw, Dean Brennan scoring both Lewes goals, and was notable for manager King's costly woollen trousers shrinking up his legs!

On Tuesday the Rooks go to Bognor in what is sure to be a needle match with Jack Pearce in the opposite dugout.

Town striker Ben Watson is the league's joint leading goalscorer with 19 this season '“ one more than Sigere '“ while Luke Nightingale, just back from injury, has 13.

The pair are responsible for 32 of Bognor's 39 league goals this campaign and will need close marking.
