Sidley covet Bexhill's prize asset

BEXHILL United's prize asset is already being courted following the resignation of manager Dave Shearing last week.

Striker Scott McDonald is the subject of a seven-day approach from higher rank neighbours Sidley United.

Sussex Division Three club Bexhill received the inquiry last Friday, meaning Sidley, who play in Division One, will be entitled to speak to the player from today (Friday).

Sidley joint manager Andy Laskey said: "He would be without a doubt a good addition, but it depends on what he wants to do. I hope he will be up for the challenge."

Shearing was influential in bringing McDonald to Bexhill amid interest from Sidley when he left another Division One outfit Eastbourne United Association in late August.

Bexhill boss Bill Trivett said: "All we can do is wait and see what happens. He said he will stay for the time being and we're hoping he will."

Trivett also believes that most other members of the squad, many of whom were brought in by Shearing, will remain at The Polegrove.

He added: "The Eastbourne lads have all come over and said they're quite happy to stay with us. I think we've got some quality lads around the club and I'm really happy with it."

Bexhill's scheduled Sussex Intermediate Cup first round tie away to Lewes reserves tomorrow has been postponed due to their opponents' first team being in FA Cup third round qualifying action.

Sidley will seek an immediate response to their midweek five-goal hammering when they host mid-table Chichester City United in the league tomorrow.

Goalkeeper Peter Newstead (hamstring) should be fit, but Perry Weedon (thigh) is doubtful and Peter Henty is definitely out after breaking a toe playing for the England Fire & Rescue Service team last week.

New signing from Hastings United, Dave Henham, and the fit-again Jimmy Watson could come into contention after playing for the reserves last weekend. Kick-off is at 3pm.

In-form Little Common will welcome West Sussex League team Southwater to The Recreation Ground in the Sussex Intermediate Cup tomorrow.

Dan Collins is unavailable, but Andy Linch is now free of work commitments for a first round tie which kicks-off at 3pm.
