It was great for the colts to be finally back on the pitch for a competitive game of rugby – and you could tell that both teams had not played any contact sport for several months as they clattered into each other with some ferocity in the first ten minutes.

East Grinstead were a big, strong side with some potent ball carriers and there were some massive hits from both sides in the opening encounters as the pent-up testosterone was unleashed.

As the first half progressed the Lewes pack started to gain control and provided some quick ball for the backs who began to find space and width and Lewes scored two fine tries backed up with a penalty to lead 17-0 at half-time.

East Grinstead were not done yet though and scored first as the second-half got underway.

Lewes heads did not drop and some patient and then skilful rugby moved the scoreboard on with three further tries before

East Grinstead picked up a consolation try near the

end.

Although there were some fine individual pieces of skill it was a real 26-man effort with no weak links and everybody contributing.

It was a fine victory over decent opposition and we look forward to what the squad can achieve over the next three weeks.
