Top scorer Will Scrase scored another two tries for Pulborough

On a wet and boggy pitch it wasn’t a day for free-flowing rugby as Pulborough scored four tries and a penalty to run out 23-0 winners.

Pulborough started with a much changed back line, Jonny Scrase and Will Jordan forming a new partnership at 9 and 10.

From the outset it showed that the Heath team which was playing didn’t deserve their bottom of the league spot, as the scoreboard remained untroubled for most of the first half.

Pulborough were exerting a lot of pressure on the Heath line, and it took 25 minutes for the determined home defence to be breached. Scrase ran down the short side from the back of a scrum, sold a lovely dummy before off loading to Charlie Mears to crossed the try line.

‘Boro went through their replacements quickly after scoring with injuries to Will Jordan at fly half, and captain Richard Nicholls in the second row. The whole forward pack changed throughout the game, with ‘Boro showing strength in depth with props Matt Blunden, Tom Turner, Guy Baxter and Josh Haulkham all interchanging.

Still the defence remained strong and just before half-time Will Akers, who had moved to fly half kicked a 30-yards penalty to put the visitors 8-0 up.

Pulborough added three more tries in the second half, two by the club’s leading scorer, young Will Scrace, one of which was finished off in superb style, keeping control of the ball with his feet for over 20m from Jonny Scrase’s box kick. Fenn Caddick added the other try from a powerful push over scrum from 10m out.

Pulborough defended hard to keep up their record of not conceding a single point in 2014 to make it a perfect 15 wins from 15 league games.

Fenn Caddick was awarded Man of the Match for his bone crunching defence, and an all round solid performance.

With a break in the league next week, Pulborough are travelling across to Rye for the Sussex Shield semi-final.
