Air raids and mental arithmetic...
“Every time the siren went, we had to leave our classrooms to go to the air raid shelters. Not able to take a pencil and paper to do our lessons, everything had to be done mentally in our head. We were so cramped. Long division, I worked out as I went along. Trying to explain it to the teacher was the difficult part. I have tried to learn computer skills. My brain just will not digest it.”
Modern schoolchildren are pictured, experiencing the dank gloom in a restored air raid shelter.
