Just eight athletes and women still win!

THERE were only eight Worthing Harriers athletes in their team for their second Southern League Division 2 match of the season.

It even became seven after one, Laura Duke, after she landed badly on her ankle while winning the pole vault with mother Alison Duke. That took Laura out of the high jump and shot putt still to come. But somehow, they did enough to finish just half a point ahead of Cambridge Harriers and win the match.

They had come third in their first meeting, at Sutton, against West Norfolk & Ryston, Yeovil and the host club - on that occasion with still only nine competitors. This time they also defeated Metropolitan Police and Southend-On-Sea, and with that they moved to seventh place in the division.

The lead changed several times during the day. Once Worthing got it they were inevitably spurred on by what might be possible and, although they could not contest the final 4x400m relay, their efforts were marginally sufficient to thwart Cambridge. The Policewomen were third.

On the track, Kelly Denyer won the 200m and took second places in the 100m and 400m, with Alison Duke second in the 100m B and Alice Sinno likewise in the 200m B. There was no 400m B performer and, as well as the 4x400m, Harriers failed to enter at all the 800m, the 1,500m, the 3,000m or the 400m hurdles. But over the 100m hurdles, they celebrated a double victory by Kayley Alcorn and B string Daniela Di Maggio.

It got even more amazing in the field, beyond the Dukes' double triumph over the pole vault bar. Although with no B string, Alcorn won the high jump. In the long jump, Sinno took second but Di Maggio won the B. Alcorn showed her superiority to win the triple jump and B string Alison Duke clinched another next double victory.

And better still in the throws. From a double-second in the shot putt from Jo Davison and Alison Duke, they went on to a hat-trick of victory pairings: Davison and Caroline Garratt in the discus, Garrett and Di Maggio in the javelin, and Davison and Laura Duke in the hammer.

Harriers will be at home in the league at West Park on June 28.
