H&B title bid dented by defeat

HASTINGS & Bexhill's title dreams appear to be over after crashing to a 25-10 defeat away to Sussex League leaders Uckfield.

H&B now lie six points adrift of top spot and look to be playing for second place and a play-off against the runners-up from the Kent League.

Despite enjoying a wealth of possession in the opening period H&B fell behind against the run of play to a breakaway try. Roger Stanley's men replied through Ben Campbell and soon after Paul Sandeman had a try controversially ruled out for a double movement.

Honours were even until the final quarter when Uckfield went over for three successive scores. Although Steve McManus pulled one back, it was a case of too little, too late.

H&B take on Rye at William Parker on Saturday February 1, kick-off 2.30pm.
