Gate goes down at the semis

THE HAYWARDS and Woodcocks ran out of road on Sunday morning but numbered themselves among the last four of the top mixed pairs in the country this year.

They were beaten 23-7 by Julie Short, Pam Parkhouse, Paul Kinsman and John Short of Devon, who went on to take the title that afternoon by three shots in the final.

Skip Ted Hayward, 81, the former World Fours champion from Middlesex, and three Ken Woodcock, 58, followed their Worthing BC colleague Matt Ives who, in their club's 99th year, reached the semi-finals of the EBA Under-25 Singles championship a week earlier at the same Beach House Park.

Lead Yvonne Woodcock, 49, and two Peggy Hayward, 61, are leading players with the Beach Park women's club. It's a husband-wife foursome and they have given their clubs something to celebrate in a lean year in domestic team bowls.
