Wick on cloud nine after another win

WICK Football Club recorded their ninth successive win on Tuesday evening when they thrashed Shoreham 5-1 at a misty Crabtree Park in County League Division 1.

George Gaskin continued his hot streak in front of goal with a hat-trick as he netted for the sixth consecutive game.

The home side meant business straight from kick-off and Andy Brown and Gaskin missed early chances.

Wick’s determination to strike first was notable and a quickfire double gave them a 2-0 lead after just 18 minutes.

Defender Julian Bonniface headed in the first when he simply nodded in from on the goal line after a looping corner and, seconds later, brilliant footwork from the hard-working Michael Asare set up Gaskin for an easy finish.

Wick remained in control of the match as half-time beckoned with the visitors only mustering a couple of efforts as they could not cope with the hosts high pressing and constant closing down.

Wick got their third four minutes into the second half. Poor visibility was not an issue for Gaskin as he curled in an inviting corner which was reacted to quickest by George Hotston, who poked in a leg to score past helpless Shoreham keeper Steve Allfrey.

With the match all but settled already and Wick’s consistent and impressive work rate, it was inevitable they were going to take their foot off the gas.

Shoreham finally showed they had some desire about them as much of the play following Wick’s third was played in their half of the pitch. The persistence of Shoreham’s Dominic Shepherd gave them a glimmer of hope just before the hour mark. His original shot in the penalty area was unexpectedly spilled by Wick’s Maciek Kason and he followed up to score from a tight angle.

However, Shoreham may have dealt the final blow to themselves when Dan Taylor was sent-off for foul and abusive language.

With five minutes remaining, Rob Wimble set up Gaskin for his second and the striker then completed his hat-trick in injury-time with a curling 20-yarder.
