Wick come from goal down to win

WICK Football Club came from a goal down to advance into the third round of the John O’Hara Cup with a late 2-1 win over division-higher Chichester.

An early error saw a pass out from the back intercepted and Patrick Mattison chipped Andy McCarthy after just two minutes.

But Wick responded well, as Michael Asare had a one-on-one effort saved when he probably should have done better.

Wick tightened things up after the break and became the better side and were soon level as Ben Johnson’s pass found Asare who finished with aplomb.

On 70 minutes, Jamie Ford had a goal ruled out for offside as his effort took a deflection off a Chi player on the way in, but the lineman adjudged Callum Cutler was in an offside position despite being nowhere near the play.

Just as Mullets boss Richard Towers had set out his stall for extra time, Ford again hit the back of the net against his old club, and this time it counted.

Asare turned provider and beat his man to cross for Ford to nod home with just minutes remaining.

Towers said: “They were better than us in the first half, a bit sharper and I felt we showed them a bit too much of the ball.

“We addressed a couple of things at half-time and really took it to them after the break so I was very pleased.

“I really thought it was going to extra time, and I had just got prepared for that when Jamie stuck it in, so I was well pleased with that.”

It came as a welcome victory for Towers after he described their 2-0 defeat to Westfield in County League Division 2 as a “dire” performance.

A goal in each half from Joe Barham sealed the points for the visitors and Towers was left scratching his head to the difference in Saturday to Tuesday’s performances.

He said: “How good we are on Tuesdays at the moment was how poor we were on Saturday.

“I don’t know if we are having too many heavy Friday nights or it’s about playing under lights, but it’s very frustrating.

“I hate to say it but they worked harder and wanted it more than us, and they were a team we should have beaten.”
