Rye desperate for dry weather

The prospects of the Boxing Day derby between Rye United and Sidley United going ahead aren’t looking good.

This was the scene at The Salts this morning (Sunday) when parts of the pitch were under water following all the rain of the preceding days.

Several days of dry weather will be required if the Sussex County Football League Division One match is to stand any chance of being played, but more rain is forecast for tonight and Christmas Day.

Both clubs have been badly affected by the weather in recent weeks. Rye, whose ground has been plagued by flooding all season, have played just twice since November 20, while Sidley have only had three matches in the same period.

As well as being through to the last 32 of the FA Vase, Rye are third in the league with 39 points from 18 games. Sidley are 15th with 22 from 19.
