Gaskin’s late double is golden for Bennett

Littlehampton Football Club boss Mark Bennett experienced his proudest managerial moment as a late George Gaskin double gave Golds a 3-2 win over Redhill in the Sussex RUR Cup on Tuesday.

Having trailed to a Gavin Gordon double after just 24 minutes, 10-man Golds hit back to set up a quarter-final clash against Peacehaven.

Alex Kew got a goal back on 33 minutes, before Jamie Thompson was taken to hospital with a dislocated shoulder and Mitchell Hand was sent off for a second yellow card early in the second half.

That galvanised Golds and they levelled through a Gaskin header on 89 minutes, before he slotted home the winner a minute later.

Although delighted, Bennett – who was also sent-off after the winner – hit out at the referee. He said: “Everything was against us. The ref was probably the worst I have ever seen. Mitch got sent off, which was a joke, but from that moment we totally dominated against a team flying high in Division 1. It was probably the proudest I’ve been as a manager.

“With such a late goal, I went down on my knees to celebrate and a ball was kicked at me and the referee came over and sent me off. That about summed up his performance.”
