Dyson hoovers up the honours at televised golf tournament

One of Goodwood's leading amateur golfers has won the prestigious 2010 Trilby Tour Amateur Championship from a field of more than 1,000 competitors.

Chris Dyson from Tangmere almost missed out on the popular televised tournament as the event was fully subscribed within weeks of the regional finals. But the 42-year-old seven handicapper scored a staggering 40 points in the final at The Buckinghamshire Club, then fought off intense competition in a four-man play-off to become champion.

Dyson has been a Goodwood member for four years. As a youngster, he dreamed of joining the PGA European Tour.

He picked up an elegant trophy and a set of personalised Callaway clubs and lessons with David Leadbetter, regarded as the world’s best coach, and personal tutor to Sir Nick Faldo.

Dyson said: “This feels surreal. I watched it on Sky last year and really wanted to enter. I just got in. I’ve won the Handicap Club Championship and Scratch Handicap event at Goodwood but to be crowned the 2010 Trilby Tour Amateur Champion is amazing.”

Launched in 2007, the Trilby Tour was created by Savile Row designer William Hunt to give all golfers the chance of hitting the big time. Dyson added: “You feel like you’re in a professional event with cameras, sponsors’ banners, marshals and crowds.”
