Wizard of Aus in seventh heaven with score of 195

Haywards Heath return to league action with a key fixture at Burgess Hill this Saturday but it was far from a quiet time last weekend.

Aussie Sam Reading struck the fourth highest total by a Heath player as he came in at No 7 in Sunday’s friendly at home to Withyham and made a staggering 195. The phenomenal knock included 10 sixes and 23 fours and with the help of No 4 Dipak Karki (67) they helped Heath to 312-9 in their 40 overs. No other batsman reached double figures.

Heath then gave 10 bowlers a try as Withyham made 211 in 39 overs. Karki completed a good afternoon with 4-9 but it was Reading’s day.

The previous evening he hit 43 off 38 deliveries to give his side a good start chasing 147-9 set by a Belgian International XI in a hastily arranged 20/20 match.

But in the end his side finished on 123-9 as Sherry Butt took 4-34 in five overs.

It was a good weekend for local rivals Cuckfield as they followed up their league victory over Three Bridges by making progress in the Sussex League’s Twenty/20 Gray Nicolls Cup.

But it was, perhaps, a little closer for comfort than they would have liked at Middleton, who had put out former Premier club Pulborough in the previous round.

Skipper James Robinson’s winning of the toss went down well as it meant most of the team could carry on watching the Wimbledon final.

After a brisk start by James Thorpe (28) and Oliver Altendorf (16) they slipped to 53-3 before Chris Mole’s brisk 29 helped set a target of 130-8, that was well short of what they were looking for.

But Altendorf bowled accurately to take 5-20 and resist the efforts of Rob Willway, who made 67 out of 121-8.
