As in the earlier match at St John’s Park, Crawley again finished without a point.

The pitch looked flat enough but Hill’s bowlers showed great accuracy after the hosts elected for first strike.

Scott Woods and Hugh Warmisham made the early breakthroughs but then Simpson and Karl Boffey strangled the life out of the hosts, who collapsed to 49-7 after they had added just 19 runs in 20 overs.

At least the tail wagged to take them to 92 as Simpson did most of the damage with 5-19 in 14.3 overs.

Some feisty bowling by Brett Bridgens brought the early demise of Hill skipper Tom Trowbridge but then Simpson (54no) and Kirk Proto (29no) showed great application on a track rapidly breaking up and starting to turn appreciably.

Simpson sealed victory and brought up his fifty in style with a towering six.

Ansty skipper Jon Young struck an unbeaten 103 to help his team to a 44-run derby victory at home to Keymer & Hassocks. He was well supported by all the other batsmen, notably opener Harry Towler (53), as the hosts set a formidable target of 260-3, scored in only 46.5 overs.

The challenge was then taken up by the two Michaels, Johnson (94) and Poole (51), but from 120-2 the Hassocks assault started to wane and they were finally dismissed for 216 in the 51st over.

It was Glen Anson who did most of the damage with 5-85 in 19 overs although there were two wickets apiece for Jack Palser and Leo Anderson.

Local clubs continue to dominate the East Division, with Lindfield now 40 points clear of the chasing pack after they dispatched visitors Rottingdean by 116 runs.

Lindfield’s 220-7 was built around the innings of Gareth Allen (64) and Joe Newcombe (52) before the Rottingdean wickets were shared around, Nathan Bell taking four of them.

Struggling Lewes were bowled out for 82 before James Pooley’s unbeaten 51 completed an eight-wicket win for Hellingly. Earlier it was Dan Pellett (6-13) who was the tormentor-in-chief.

In the West Division Henfield played out an exciting tie at Pagham, who had set a target of 233-8, while Billingshurst lead the division by 30 points after Dhanushka Mitapalooraaci hit 101 not out in their seven-wicket win at Slinfold.
