Nasty surprise in Storr for Aldwick ... Selsey chime at Belgrave

Here are the latest first and scond XI reports from the local Invitation League clubs.

Aldwick v Storrington

West Sussex Invitation League division two

Aldwick’s league campaign well and truly came off the rails as bottom club Storrington inflicted a crushing defeat by eight wickets on the promotion hopefuls.

They started well enough with in-form opener Louis Paul (42) making his usual worthy contribution until a combination of a top fielding display (nine catches) from the visitors and an inept batting display (five ducks ) from the home side had Aldwick facing an embarrassing defeat.

They were bowled out in the 37th over for just 125. Only a late rally from No 11 Ben Bainbridge (20*) managed to push the final total into three figures.

Consistent wicket-taking bowling from Billy Harris (4-20), Matt Pickard (2-34), and Lawrence Green (3-35) was the key to Aldwick’s undoing but they had only themselves to blame.

Adam Robinson (1-21) and Ollie Smith (1-45) gave Aldwick a faint possibility of an unlikely victory by removing openers Iain Haggard (14) and Jamie Carter (14) early.

However, Dan Pickard (42*) and Robert Haggard (51*) then came to the crease and strolled to victory as they shared in an unbroken 100-run third-wicket partnership against the home side’s ineffectual bowling display.

This week Aldwick must win against Clymping to keep hope alive any chance of promotion.

Belgrave Adelaide v Selsey

Division three

Selsey produced a spirited display to remain top of division three.

Adelaide won the toss and elected to bat and were dismissed for 171 in the 49th over. Darrl Wild top scored with 66 and he was well supported by Woodsford with 37.

Selsey worked hard in the field with Tom Cripps bowling superbly taking four for 38. He was well supported by Tom Amis (2-37), Peter Horner (2-31), Ed Fox (1-33) and Matt Weller who took his maiden first-team wicket with one for 10.

Selsey knew 171 was a competitive score especially with the pitch offering some variable bounce at times.

But their openers saw off the new ball with Karl Walton scoring 28 and Andy Horner holding an end up for 13.

Tom Benham scored a breezy 22 before he fell, and captain Nic Nolan took Selsey to the brink of victory with a hard-fought 59 before he fell to a tired-looking shot.

It was left to Pete Horner to hit the winning runs and secure a maximum-point haul. This was an encouraging display by a team missing a few regulars – credit to the guys who stepped in and showed promise.

West Wittering v Three Bridges

Division three

On a piping hot day at Millenium Meadow, West Wittering were put into bat on a quick pitch.

Wittering lost two quick wickets to the probing pace of Three Bridges’ Brodie Chalcroft before Mark Taylor (29) and James White (88) began the rebuild.

With Robert Legg firing down bouncer after bouncer Taylor was eventually undone by a fuller-pitched ball which went down the throat of long-off.

Mitch Hackshaw (27) and Harry Staight (39) played in the shadow of James White’s phenomenal innings in which he hit four towering straight sixes. White’s hitting took West Wittering to a run rate touching six an over.

Things were looking rosy before Chalcroft tore through the tail to end up with figures of five for 46 and forced Wittering to declare on 260 for nine off 45 overs.

Alex Salmon (3-35) got Wittering off to a good start with two early wickets but Krishan Nayee’s wonderful 62 and Adam Razzaq’s fast firing 34 put the Wittering party on hold.

Captain Carl Tupper (1-5) turned to the slow left-arm bowling of Johnny Miller (1-20) to break the partnership and end Nayee’s measured innings.

With the partnership broken Matt Jewiss (2-35) helped to clean up the tail and bowl Three Bridges out for 171 with six overs to spare.

Chichester Priory Park 3rd v Aldwick 2nd

Division six

A total of 174 was enough for a victory for Priory Park thirds against Aldwick despite the brave efforts of Aldwick’s Will Lawry (42) and Charlie Barnett (21) as they eventually finished 37 runs short.

Harry Rosser (4-38) captured Park’s first four batsmen in a good spell but it was the consistency of their batting, coupled with a late knock from Guy Montgomery (34*) that enabled the home side to post a defendable total.

Opener William Price (37) was top scorer and other wickets came from Will Pegg (2-25) and Shakil Molla (2-11) for Aldwick.

Guy Montgomery complimented his batting display with an equally impressive bowling display (3-22) which was the impetus for a home side victory.

Elliott Purser (4-31) cleaned up proceedings as Aldwick wickets fell at too regular intervals as they were bowled out for 139 in the 31st over.

This week fourth-placed Aldwick are at home to table-toppers Littlehampton Clapham & Patching 2.

West Wittering 2nd v Littlehampton 3rd

Division eight

West Wittering won the toss and elected to field on strip that looked like it hadn’t seen a mower in a while.

Jack Lyons and Joe Sissions opened the bowling with nice line and length between them but were not able to break through with Lyons having two catches dropped.

The breakthrough came in the sixth over with Stuart Moorey catching one at full stretch off the bowling of Sissons. Stuart Moorey was a tad expensive, but Rob Gray took the game to Littlehampton bowling great lines and variation that the batsmen found it hard to handle or score runs off.

Gray ripped through the top order and ending with four for ten off nine overs with five maidens. K Moshin played well with some great style for an under-14, holding up his end placing shots around the pitch off solid bowling. Littlehampton were all out for a reasonable 131.

West Wittering opened with consistent Liam Bates and hard-hitting Alistair Phillips-Hill. Phillips-Hill hit big shots early on, but dragged on for 17.

Moorey joined Bates and didn’t hang about, scoring 31 in a short space of time, but was caught on the boundary. West Wittering were 64 for two after 10 overs when Moorey left the field and then wickets starting to fall dramatically and run scoring was slowing up to a near standstill and soon the score was 78 for four off 20 overs.

A Wittering Wobble ensued and they finished up short on 99 all out, for their first loss of the campaign.
