Chloe, Chelsea strike gold

Four junior members of the Sussex judo squad competed in the London International at the Excel Centre in London's Docklands.

Chloe Church fought in the under-37kg weight category (8-9 years) and the group above and defeated all her four opponents with maximum scores to gain the gold medal.

Next up was Hailsham Comm-unity College student Ashley Wright. Losing her first fight in the golden score extra-time, she then went on to defeat her next four opponents, showing real skill, especially in her ground work, and winning the silver medal in the under-49kg category (10-11 years).

Fellow HCC student and sister Chelsea Wright fought in the under-60kg category (14-15 years). In a large group of 15 competitors she managed to outclass all five opponents with two strangles and three throws which scored Ippon, gaining her a well-deserved gold medal.

Last up was Kieron Church in the under-64kg category (14-15 years). In a tough group filled with British and Dutch competitors Kieron won his first two fights with ease.

He then won his next bout against a top British cadet by a referee's decision after a hard four-minute fight.

His win put him through to the final in which a poor decision by the referee in the golden score left Kieron with a well-earned silver medal.
