Bexhill throw away chance of victory

TWO points dropped rather than a point gained was Bexhill United manager Tony Monk's assessment of a goalless draw against mid-table Lingfield.

Bexhill wasted a catalogue of opportunities and in the end it needed a superb double save from Aaron Heritage to prevent the visitors from inflicting what would have been a cruel defeat.

"The chances were all clear-cut and we should have been 3-0 up by half time," lamented Monk. "I'm disappointed about dropping two points but at least we are creating chances and if we keep doing that the goals will come."

Richard Anderson, who was later sent off for throwing a punch, was at the hub of much of Bexhill's best work in the opening period. The lively winger set up the first genuine chance for Dominic Bigg who was unable to direct his free header goalwards. Soon after Bigg dashed past the last defender but with only the keeper to beat he blazed over.

Anderson then drove the ball across goal for Conrad Sparkes but the forward slid in to somehow lift his finish over the Lingfield crossbar. Ollie Leigh became the next culprit to miss a glorious opening when his shot from six yards lacked the power to trouble the keeper.

Bexhill were reduced to 10 men five minutes into the second half when Anderson saw red for lashing out during a scuffle. Lingfield should also have had a player sent off but the centre half who ran 30 yards to push Anderson to the ground was only shown a yellow card.

Despite being a player short Bexhill started to play some good football and Darren Witham was unlucky to see his 20-yard drive come back off the crossbar.

Lingfield almost snatched the points five minutes from time but East India Tandoori man of the match Heritage did well to block the first shot and then react to gather the rebound.
