Bexhill out of the running

A BELOW par batting performance resulted in a disappointing defeat for Bexhill against an average Roffey outfit on the opening day of the Sussex Cricket League.

After skipper Steve Phillimore had won the toss and elected to bat, Bexhill failed to post a truly competitive total on a tough wicket.

Phillimore admitted a total of 160 was shy of their intended target. He said: "We were 20 runs short of what we wanted. Their bowling was not that penetrative to be honest. It was a slow old wicket and the conditions made it tough for batting."

A steady fall of wickets stopped any real progress being made with Matt Blackman (39) and Martin Phillimore (25) the only batsmen to really get going.

During the tea interval the sun came out, the wind stopped and the wicket dried out enabling Roffey to slowly knock off the runs without ever looking in too much trouble.

Kiwi Mark Jefferson, who escaped a tough dropped catch when in single figures, went on to post an impressive 59 as Roffey totalled 161-5. New Aussie signing Peter Lewis took an encouraging 2-39.
