Beare Necessities success

Findon farrier Martin Hogan achieved an outstanding training success when the latest horse he has nursed back to fitness finished a 20-1 second at Fontwell Park on Sunday. Beare Necessities had been off the track for almost two years after injuring a leg so badly that he was on the point of being put down.

"Andrew Wates gave him to me. He had only raced twice and had a really terrible injury. But he has shown us today that he has the talent and ability, provided we can keep him sound, though I may choose not to run him again this season and leave him for next year," said Hogan, who is a permit holder.

His wife, Barbara, rides the seven-year-old gelding out every day. "You could put him in a riding school, he has such a good temperament. I spent the summer tinkering with him and getting him fit. I'm delighted with his performance today," said Hogan.

The gelding was in a highly competitive field and was a fine second in the race, which was won by evens favourite Grasp, trained at Brighton by Gary Moore.

Beare Necessities is the latest in a small number of horses nursed back to winning form by Hogan- he also currently has Isam Top and Mystical Star in training and in the last five seasons has sent out eight winners and 29 placed horses, earning more than 50,000 in prize money.

*Rosnic, trained by Peter Winkworth achieved his third win from three runs over fences, when winning at Sandown on Saturday, partnered by Philip Hide. He's a progressive horse who should go on to win again. The yard also sent out an interesting runner in grey Instant Appeal, who finished third in a novice chase at Fontwell, on ground not to his liking.He's a nice sort who should also be providing the in form yard with more winners.
