Baker double ends Sidley season on a high

PETER Baker hit his 30th goal of the season as Sidley United finished an inconsistent season in style with a 4-1 defeat of Three Bridges on Tuesday.

Joint manager Glen Sully was again in sole charge due to Peter Heritage's continuing back problems, and with no less than 15 players missing he brought in 18-year-olds Matt Shoesmith, Matt Dadswell and Steve Morris.

Sully said: "The football we played was probably as good as it's been all season but the best thing about the game was the way the young players came in and did well.

"They've all got good attitudes, train hard and listen well and if they keep it up they could have very bright futures here."

Sidley opened the scoring after Baker twice had his shot blocked by the keeper. Receiving the rebound off the keeper for the third time, he squared the ball to Kevin Rose who finally hit the back of the net.

Pat Massaro levelled just before half time, but a six-minute blitz just past the hour saw the Blues score three more.

Paul Balch restored the lead from close range before Baker netted his first with a wicked left foot effort.

He doubled his tally with an audacious 25-yard shot that bounced over the keeper for a memorable milestone goal.
