Badminton tournament holds court

THE best players in the county will be pitting their wits at the Bexhill Badminton Tournament at the De La Warr Pavilion from Thursday January 9.

More than 250 competitors are expected to take part in the annual tournament which runs until January 26.

Top Sussex players will kick off the tournament on the first day with Danny Smith looking to retain the trophies he won last year.

The ladies' competition the following day will also include some of the cream of county badminton with Jodie Hobden, Karen Arscott, Mandy White and Suzan Cottingham all taking part.

The finals of the first round of senior events will be held on Sunday, starting at 5pm. The tournament concludes with the junior finals.

Tournament programme (January 9-19): Thursday - men's doubles A; Friday - ladies doubles A; Saturday - men's singles C, mixed doubles B, generation doubles; Sunday - men's doubles A final, ladies doubles A final, men's singles C final, mixed doubles B final, generation doubles final, boys u14s singles, boys u14s doubles, girls u14s doubles; Monday - men's doubles C; Tuesday - ladies doubles over 45s; Wednesday - ladies doubles B; Thursday - mixed doubles D; Friday - men's singles A; Saturday - men's singles B, men's doubles over 45s, mixed doubles open; Sunday - men's doubles C final, ladies doubles over 45s final, ladies doubles B final, mixed doubles D final, men's singles A final, men's singles B final, men's doubles over 45s final, mixed doubles open final, boys u12s singles, boys u12s doubles, mixed u16s.

Weekday matches will be held from 6.45pm-11pm and weekend matches from 9am-11pm. Spectators welcome.
