Abbey clinch Sunday football title

A SLICE of history was made last weekend when a team from Battle won the Hastings & East Sussex Sunday Football League for the first time ever.

Abbey beat Seven Stars 4-1 to clinch the Division One title, which dates back to 1965, with two games to spare.

Two goals from Sam Jamison and one apiece for Gary Bryant and Chris Smith completed a double for the Claverham Community College-based side following their Demarco Cup triumph seven days previously.

Things didn't go completely smoothly at Robertsbridge Recreation Ground, though, because they fell behind to an 18th minute strike from Matt Tidmarsh.

But Jamison, whose brace took him ahead of Dominic Clarke as the team's leading scorer with 21 strikes to his credit, got them back on track by beating the last defender and coolly stroking home only two minutes later.

A succession of missed chances followed and Abbey, who for various reasons were without 12 members of their 24-strong squad, had a big let-off in the final minute of the first half when a Jon Novis strike was disallowed for offside.

The visitors capitalised on this reprieve to take a 56th minute lead, Jamison brilliantly volleying in a clever dink over the defence by Smith.

Seven minutes later, Jamison and Smith combined for youngster Bryant to fire home number three.

Their fifth victory over The Stars this season was assured by Smith confidently dispatching a 78th minute penalty following an unceremonious foul on Jamison.

Ore United have been confirmed as Division Two champions. The runaway leaders made sure with a 5-2 win over Hungry Horse Boys on Thursday, last week. Carl Oxingham (3), Wesley Wilson and Dan Borrelli netted, while Matt Simmons grabbed both goals in reply.

They rubber-stamped their success at the weekend by easing to a 4-0 victory against third-placed Welcome Stranger, all four goals coming from the prolific Oxingham.
