Young singers join band for fundraiser

Singing pupils at a Bognor Regis school joined adult musicians for a fundraising concert.

The combined performance between Nyewood CE Junior School and Bognor Regis Concert Band raised more than 1,000.

The money will help to pay for the recently installed security fencing around the Brent Road premises. The work included controlled access gates.

As Nyewood is a church-aided school, fundraising has to be made towards such projects.

The children in the school's performance club took centre stage in the concert after months of hard work and preparation.

They performed songs from musicals such as the Lion Kingand Oliver.

The concert took place at St Wilfrid's Church. Headteacher Jane Wells said: 'The pupils have worked extremely hard, rehearsing the songs, practising the dance routines and the hand bells.

'To have the chance to perform with the Bognor Regis Concert Band is also a great opportunity.

'It was a fantastic afternoon and the children hope to repeat the event.'

The band's musical director Howard Burchfield said: 'We are naturally delighted to have been asked to support this fundraising concert.

'It is one of the reasons why we are here. We are performing our role as a true community band.

'It is hard enough for an adult choir to perform with a live band.

'So, for the choir at Nyewood Juniors to take on this challenge filled me with admiration and respect, not only for the pupils but also the staff.'

Most of the concert saw the children singing and dancing to songs from the musicals.

They then took their seats and joined in with singing and flag-waving while the band played a selection of Proms music.
