Organised nationally by the Marine Conservation Society, the event is being run locally by grassroots sustainability group Transition Town Worthing (TTW).

Barbara Shaw, from TTW, said: “The beach clean is always a fantastic day and we’re grateful for Southern Water’s continued support.

“There are lots of other things happening alongside it this year, including various stands covering topics as diverse as aquatic sports, astronomy and recycling. There are opportunities to learn about coastal wildlife and geology through guided walks and a chance to help create a sculpture and building materials out of litter found on the beach.”

Earlier this year, Southern Water sponsored the group to cover its insurance costs for the beach clean and its other sustainability initiatives for the next three years.

The company has also produced 100 hi-visibility vests for people taking part in the beach clean to wear.

Geology enthusiast David Bone, from Southern Water’s environmental regulation team, will also be on hand to guide the volunteers through the rich geological history of the beach and surrounding landscape with his talk entitled The Nature of Flint.

Registration for the event starts at 10.30am in Beach Parade.
