Wick flower shop’s charity day is a blooming success

THE Queen’s diamond jubilee helped the annual charity day held by a Wick florist to blossom even more than usual.

The Flower Shop, in the True Blue shopping precinct, raised a highly impressive £1,333 on Thursday (May 31) with a series of mainly jubilee-themed activities.

Celebration cakes made by staff, “favour” boxes containing chocolates, and hand-crafted red, white and blue felt badges were on sale, and there was a lucky square board with the dates 1952-2012 for the Queen’s reign, one of them masking the prize of a tea tray with union jack teapot and mugs and a fruit cake.

A bumper raffle with 46 prizes donated by individuals and local businesses made more than £400 and a tombola generated almost £300.

Lucky envelopes and a prize flower quiz were among other money-spinners devised by shop owner Michelle Bly and her staff.

Helped on the day by family and friends, they were fund-raising for Cancer Research UK and also for the Donald Wilson Neurological Rehabilitation Centre at Chichester, where one of their colleagues is currently being treated.

“She was able to join us on the day, and it was lovely to see her,” said Michelle. “We are delighted to have raised so much money, as such a small concern, and had to fit in our normal work around everything else, so it was quite hectic!

“We would like to thank everyone for their support,” said Michelle.
