WHISPERING SMITH: Screens and beans, windmills and coffee mills

It seems a couple of local councillors discovered that the signage showing the location of the facility had vanished, giving the impression that this popular attraction was no more.

Such is the nature of social media that within hours photos and comments regarding the matter had been posted and the cry of ‘foul’ darkened the local internet as the irate populace began to stir.

As it turned out such a dark event was the result of the premature removal of existing Inspire Leisure signage before replacement by the new provider. The sign was quickly restored so all was well.

However, the incident revealed two important facts; one, it showed that members were on the ball and, secondly, that Arun is not fully trusted where this very popular venue is concerned.

Italian cop Montalbano sits on his balcony each morning drinking coffee from his Moka Pot whilst looking across the clear Sicilian waters.

I like that idea, especially on a cold wet Sunday in Littlehampton.

So I bought a Moka Pot and sought to emulate the bald detective – I already have the thinning hair so it wasn’t too big a leap.

However, coffee is not as straightforward as you might imagine and efforts at getting the perfect blend eluded me, so I popped out to Edgcumbes, in Ford Lane, to find out what the dark bean is all about and learned more about coffee in a five minute chat with one of the helpful young experts there than I have learned in my multiple years of drinking indifferent mugs of the stuff.

Take the ride, sample the wares, see how it is done from start to finish, you won’t be disappointed.

Coffee is romantic, with tea, ‘Coming in for a cuppa...?’ does not have the connotations of the late evening invite, ‘Won’t you come in for a coffee...?’
