Wet, Wet, Wet

HEAVY rainfall sparked spectacular flooding in Arundel and Houghton last week and over the weekend.

Floodplains along the River Arun in the two areas were transformed into lakes after above average rainfall in the last three months and heavy rain over the previous few days.

Fields off the Causeway and at Limetree Walk flooded and at the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust in Mill Road, birds which do not react well to continual amounts of water were moved as a precaution.

Arundel Football Club's pitch and Mill Road children's playground and putting green were also under water, along with floodplains in Houghton and Amberley.

David Bonner, the Environment Agency's flood warning team leader for Sussex, said: "We do expect conditions to improve through the week and the five-day forecast shows very little rain through to the weekend and beyond.

"But it is still early winter and people need to be vigilant. With many areas saturated, if we have more bad weather it will take only a little water to bring the rivers back up and cause problems."
