'˜Walkies' in the winter wonderland

MORE than 12 inches of snow fell on Hastings this week - closing schools, causing chaos on the roads and leaving people marooned in their own homes.

Temperatures plummeted as low as -10 yesterday (Thursday) as cold winds howled their way through the snow-capped streets of 1066 Country.

And many readers contacted the Observer to say it was the worst snow they had ever seen hit Hastings.

Disruption started in earnest on Wednesday, with roads left dangerous after an overnight sprinkling continued into the day.

However, it was in the early hours of yesterday that the winter weather worsened – with some areas reporting more than a foot falling in just a few hours.

The majority of schools closed until further notice on Wednesday, but spare a thought for pupils at Sacred Heart School in Old London Road. The Catholic primary was one of just two schools in the whole of East Sussex still open yesterday.

The south east of England was among the worst hit areas of England over the last two days, but Hastings still has a long way to go before beating the record for lowest ever temperature. That was set in Braemar in the Scottish Highlands back in 1982 - with thermometers measuring a miserable -27.2.

Things were due to improve today (Friday), with the Met Office predicting lows of -3 and fog rather than snow.

Saturday is due to be cloudy but with highs of eight degrees, while Sunday promises heavy rain.

However, by Monday experts are predicting sunshine. Although don’t reach for the shorts just yet. The temperature still won’t top four degrees.
