VOTE: Have the cloak-and-dagger knitters enhanced Littlehampton?

THESE trees in Littlehampton received a surprise “make-over” this week, leaving shoppers and visitors perplexed.

More than a dozen colourful woollen hats, scarves, sleeves and baubles were mysteriously pinned to trees and benches in High Street, by a pair of unknown women on Monday evening.

They spent more than an hour sewing and stitching their woollen creations to the trees, benches and metal railings outside both the Dolphin Pub and Peacocks clothing store.

The Dolphin’s bemused landladies Katie and Ellie Boiling witnessed the mystery make-over, which began at about 9pm.

Katie said: “It’s one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever seen.

“I looked out of the window and saw this pair of women, with stepladders, sewing these baubles onto the tree. They were very shady when I went out and asked them what they were doing. They said they were trying to make the town look nicer.”

However, Katie remains reserved about whether or not the pair achieved their goal.

“It’s... Well it’s a bit weird, isn’t it? I’m not really sure if the town looks any nicer,” she admitted.

A spokeswoman for Littlehampton Town Council, which looks after many of the town centre’s floral displays, said that it was not responsible for the woollen decorations.
