Views wanted on future of Cuckmere estuary

A PUBLIC consultation about the possibility of flooding the Cuckmere Valley started today (Monday).

The Cuckmere estuary, considered by many to be a Sussex icon, is at risk, according to the Environment Agency.

It says climate change, sea level rise and past interference by man are putting it under increasing pressure.

The Environment Agency believes the best long-term option for the Cuckmere estuary is to allow it to go back to being a tidal estuary that can adapt to climate change and is asking for the public's views on its recommendation to stop maintaining the existing defences.

Local people and vistitors will have until December 10 to find out more and comment on the recommendation before it is finalised.

An exhibition is on display at Seven Sisters Country Park Visitors Centre throughout the consultation period.

Drop-in sessions are being held so people can talk with members of the project team to ask questions and find out more about the proposals.
