Vehicle Crime Down

VEHICLE crime in Lancing has dropped by 24 per cent over the last year, according to figures revealed by police.

The Highdown police report examines crime and related issues in Lancing from April, 2001, before it was amalgamated with Shoreham police sector on April 4 this year.

The figures also show a 2.8 per cent cut in the number of reported crimes from 2001, although they also show a one per cent increase in the number of burglaries over the same period.

The report also notes that community beat officers in Shoreham and Lancing will continue to work from their respective stations.

The divisional patrol car at Shoreham police station will assume some responsibility to cover the Lancing and Sompting area, which will also be supported by patrols working out of Centenary House in Durrington.

Patrols around Test Road, Sompting, are to be stepped up according to the report, which notes: "Any youths found committing public order offences will be dealt with firmly and where appropriate, prosecuted. This is an area that is already receiving a higher uniform police profile since the amalgamation."

Highdown's Superintendent Graham Walter said: "These successful figures are down to the hard work and determination of all Highdown personnel, both police officers and support staff.

"This is a remarkable achievement, and is testament to the commitment, energy and sheer determination shown by Highdown divisional staff.

"They represent real reductions in the number of burglaries of people's homes, vehicles that are broken into or stolen, people who are assaulted all of which helps make Highdown a safer place to live."
