Vandals wreck Edwardian shelter

A CENTURY-old shelter which is a major feature of Bexhill's Edwardian seafront may have to be abandoned to the vandals until a Summer re-build.

The timber-built shelter on De La Warr Parade by the Sailing Club has been a regular target for vandals for months.

Rother coastal control officer Patrick Meyer said this week: "We have had thousands of pounds worth of damage done down there.

"I have virtually a standing order with the builders to repair it each time

"We had 500 worth of damage done to it last weekend alone.

"We are trying to think of a new way of dealing with the problem. We are thinking of taking it all down - windows, wooden slats the lot - and just leaving the sides open until Summer when it can be re-built, possibly on more substantial lines with something like plastic instead of wood and glass."
