Vandals strike in popular public gardens

Vandals have caused damage to the popular Southover Grange Gardens in Lewes.

The damage included pulling up plants from the bedding displays and breaking off topiary bushes at the roots. These plants were then thrown around the gardens.

As well as damage to the plants, beds were trampled over, a bin was overturned and attempts were made to block the stream running through the gardens.

The gardens are locked in the evenings, but unofficial entry can be made by climbing the walls.

The councils' contractors, Wyevale Landscapes Ltd, who maintain the gardens, will replace the plants where possible so that the displays maintain their splendour.

Andy Frost, Parks Manager at Lewes District Council said: 'It is so disappointing when a minority of people cause damage to an area that is so popular and well used by the public. The spring flower displays were just coming into full bloom.'
