On Friday, 23 homes and businesses including the Angel Hotel and Faustino’s restaurant were left in the dark for 11 hours after a power cut.

An SSE spokesman said it had been caused by ‘third party’ damage to a cable some time ago which had been deteriorating: “We would like to apologise for the power cut, and for any inconvenience our work to repair the fault has caused road-users.

“We are committed to ensuring our network is as robust and resilient as possible and began work to replace sections of our underground cables in North Street. When we were working there we came across other parts that could also be replaced at the same time, avoiding the need to come back at a later date. We are doing everything we can to complete this essential work as safely and as quickly as possible.”
