Is airport too close to nuclear power plant?

THE spectre of a nuclear disaster in the Rye area was raised at London’s High Court as protestors challenge plans to expand Lydd Airport.

A top lawyer, acting for Lydd Airport Action Group, warned that thousands could die if a plane were to land on Dungeness B.

Matthew Horton QC told the judge: “Dungeness A and B were not constructed to withstand the impact of an aircraft above a certain weight.”

He said the possibility of such an accident is taken extremely seriously by the European Commission, particularly following the accident at the Fukshima reactors in Japan following the earthquake and the tsunami in March 2011.
