Littlehampton road is a ‘deathtrap’

“A DEATHTRAP waiting to happen” – these were the words used to describe a road through a Littlehampton housing estate.

Concerned residents in Toddington Park claim that the junction between Toddington Lane and Holmes Way is used as a rat-run through the Elysian Fields/Eden Park development.

Many in the road have described how near-misses with cars pulling out of Holmes Way into Toddington Lane, are an almost daily occurance.

Sue Lawrence, 48, who has lived in Toddington Park for 14 years, said: “We have had countless hair-raising moments.

“The road is an absolute nightmare during the morning and evening rush hours.”

Sue’s husband, Steven, 51, said: “Coming into our road from Toddington Lane is a death trap waiting to happen.”

Another resident of Toddington Park, Linda Ledwith, 53, said: “People just travel too fast down Holmes Way.”

Last week, more than 30 households in Toddington Park united behind a petition calling for action.

The petition, drawn up by residents Enid Newman, 71 and her husband, Lionel Newman, 79, was sent to the highways department at West Sussex County Council, as well as to Nick Gibb, MP for Littlehampton and Bognor Regis.

Enid said: “There are plenty of families who have all had the same experience and the county council needs to do something about this.”

A spokeswoman from the county council said: “The highways department received the petition at the end of last week and is now discussing the best way forward in the matter.

“In the meantime, highways staff will be inspecting the vegetation in Toddington Lane and Toddington Park and will cut it back where necessary.

“The department will also be contacting Sussex Police to see if any enforcement can be implemented by them to help resolve the issue.”
