THE Swan in Southover High Street won the annual Toad in the Hole world championships at Lewes Town Hall on Wednesday.

It was their first ever win, although they have been runners-up several times.

In fact The Swan couldn't lose in the final. Having entered two teams - Swan Cygnets and Swan A - they ended up playing each other!

Said licensee Glenys Blackman: 'We are all very proud of our achievement. Our winning shield is proudly on display.'

Some 12 teams took part in the hotly-contested tournament, organised by Lewes Lions as part of the Lewes Festival.

The traditional Sussex pub game is played with teams of four who throw heavy brass discs into a hole in a wooden box on legs.
