Threat to car service

Mayfield and Five Ashes Community Car Service was so highly thought of that in 2005 it was honoured with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.

It is manned entirely by volunteers but an essential link is the co-ordinator who receives requests from patients and allocates them to available drivers.

Current co-ordinator Adrian Wells wants to retire. Chairman Rosemary Neal said: 'We realise it is now a big commitment for one person so we will take a flexible approach and organise the task so two or three people could share it.'
