Student hit day after arrival

A 17-YEAR-OLD German student suffered serious head and leg injuries after he was in collision with a car '“ just a day after he arrived in the country.

The boy was seen crossing the A259 Brighton Road at Lancing, close to the Saltings roundabout, with two other pedestrians on Friday evening, when he collided with a Rover car travelling west.

The victim, who hasn't been named, was taken to Worthing Hospital but then transferred to Southampton General Hospital's neurological unit, where his condition yesterday was described as stable.

One witness said he saw the three teenagers cross one side of the road to the central pedestrian refuge, where two of them stopped but the victim just carried on walking.

"He was hit by the car, which threw him 15ft into the air, before he landed on the road. There was nothing the driver could do. We waited with the injured lad until the ambulance arrived."

The Rover driver was shocked but uninjured. Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 0845 6070999, quoting Operation Village.
