Sinkhole closes road in Burgess Hill

A road was closed after a sinkhole appeared in Burgess Hill yesterday (Tuesday March 29).

A statement from West Sussex Highways said the emergency road closure had been put in place while the hole, in Mill Road, was inspected.

The statement said a diversion would be put in place.

A West Sussex County Council representative said they had closed the road around 4.30pm.

Since then, contractors have been digging a ‘trial hole’ to see how deep the sinkhole goes.

He said they hoped to know more by Wednesday morning.
