SHOCKING TOLL OF A27

EIGHTEEN people have been killed and hundreds injured on a major East Sussex road during the past 10 years, it has been revealed.

Statistics compiled by Sussex Police show the A27 between Lewes and Polegate was the scene of 516 accidents, resulting in injuries, in the decade up to 2005.

Campaigners have been calling for road improvements on the A27 between Lewes and Polegate for years.

Ray Gravett, chairman of Firle Parish Council, said this week: 'Living close to the Firle straight, I am more than aware how dangerous the road has become.

'Over the years, the parish council has encouraged the Highways Agency to make improvements.

'We are very keen to see this stretch made safer.

'There is no doubt that drivers must take extra care on the straight when driving between Lewes and Polegate.'

The East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has repeatedly stated that motorists should slow down there to prevent more crashes.
