Sally Roberts thanksgiving service - 2pm on Wednesday, October 18, not noon as published in this week's Herald

A CHARITY to help poverty-stricken children at a school in Kenya has been set up in memory of a police woman from Worthing killed in a jet-ski accident.

Sally Roberts, 28, of West Worthing, died on September 30 in a jet-ski accident while on holiday in Mombasa, Kenya, with her boyfriend, Andrew Freeman, 27, of Redhill, Surrey.

Sally, who was an officer for the Metropolitan Police, adored children and just days before her death had visited the Stephen Kanja primary school in the Shimba Hills, helping to make desks, plant trees and pledging to sponsor teachers and students, and to return to teach English.

In her memory, her family and friends have decided to set up the Sally's Children's Trust, which aims to provide the 529 children at the school with better facilities.

Her sister, Gil, 27, of Crawley, said: "Sally loved children and it is a comfort to us to have a project we can focus on which is so positive and that the people in Kenya will benefit from, and also to do something Sally wanted to do."

Andrew, who had been dating Sally for six years, said: "We visited the school a few days before the accident and it was very sad how little the children had. We hope the charity, which is run by a trust, will make a difference and bring something positive out of a very sad thing."

The school has more than 500 students, aged four to 16, but only eight teachers. The classes have around 52 pupils in each of them. The children have no food while at school and some of the roofs leak.

The charity aims to provide the school with a water tank, new library and books, new roofs, pay for more school teachers, build a kitchen and increase the sports facilities.

Organisers of Sally's Children's Trust are also in the process of setting up a website, www.sallyschildren.com

Schools interested in twinning with the school should visit the website, where there is an address to which they can send emails for more details.

* A thanksgiving service for Sally on Wednesday, October 18, will be at 2pm, not noon as published in this week's Herald.

The service will be held at Offington Park Methodist Church in South Farm Road.

Family members are asking people not to worry about flowers, but to make donations to Sally's Children's Trust by sending cheques, along with a name and address, so gift aid can be claimed, to Baker & Sons funeral directors, 60 Church Road, Portslade, BN41 1LA.
