The former Steyning Grammar School pupil took the three-and-a-half-hour exam last year. He now goes through to the next stage, competing later this year for one of the British places in the 36th International Physics Olympiad in Salamanca, in Spain.

Five other Lancing College students gained a silver medal and two received bronze medals.

Headmaster Peter Tinniswood said: "I am proud of Lancing's strong all-round performance in this year's Olympiad. We are particularly delighted by Rupert's outstanding achievement, as it is the first time we've won a gold medal.

"We'll all now be backing him in the next round and wishing him the best."
