River Beach staff member’s hair-raising fund-raiser

“No pain, no gain” – that’s the ethos one River Beach Primary School staff member wished wasn’t the case as he had his beloved chest hair ripped off for charity.

Gary Jackson, 46, was left reeling in pain as colleagues and friends tore his chest hair out – a move which raised £575 for Breast Cancer Campaign.

Gary, who lives in Middleton but has been the Littlehampton-based primary’s premises manager for five years, said it was well worth the pain.

“It all stemmed following the death of my mum, Doreen, who had suffered with breast cancer about eight years before she passed away,” he said.

“I noticed that a lot of the women here do fund-raisers for Cancer Research, but not many of the blokes do.

“So I was flying the flag for us men!”

Gary had his chest sugared – a treatment which uses a soft putty to take away excess hair, instead of the traditional wax strips.

The night took place earlier this month around friend and fellow colleague Bella Walsh’s house, in Oakcroft Gardens, Littlehampton.

He added that the sugaring was “very painful” and that a number of his work colleagues turned out to support his hair-raising fund-raiser.

“I know I certainly boosted numbers during the night.

“I think people just wanted to see me in a bit of pain, to be honest. At the end of the day, it was all good fun.”
