Members of the Finance and Performance Working Group discussed the necessity of raising council tax whilst assessing the council’s projected budget in upcoming years.

Cllr Roger Arthur (UKIP, Chanctonbury) said: “Many taxpayers can’t ask private sector employers to increase prices to their customers to cover increased council tax charges and we should not seek to take advantage of them.

“Many of them have suffered reductions in their disposable incomes for some years, whilst many pensioners have had cost of living rises.

“We should not burden them further, until all other options have been exhausted.”

Cllr John Chidlow (Con, Southwater) said: “I always think it is not the majority of us sitting around this table we need to be thinking of - council tax makes a difference to what you can spend on your groceries.”
