Nus Ghani was appointed to the junior Government post at the start of 2018 by Theresa May and kept the job when Mr Johnson took over as Prime Minister.

As a Parliamentary under secretary of state, her role included responsibility for maritime, freeports, skills and apprenticeships and accessibility.

But the MP, who has represented Wealden since 2015, is one of the casualties of today’s reshuffle.

On Twitter she said: “Huge privilege to have been transport minister and we’ve achieved so much In 2 years. Thanks to the great team in the Department and now I get to spend more time with family and constituents.”

There was some surprise expressed at the move on social media, with several describing how in some circles Ms Ghani had been tipped for a promotion.
