THE MINISTER of state for care services was given an insight into the importance of Littlehampton’s newest, specialist care home.

Ahead of the Government’s proposed shake-up of care services in England, MP Paul Burstow visited McCarthy & Stone’s new “Extra Care” development, Claridge House, in Church Street, to see how specialist housing can help older people live a happier, healthier lives.

The minister was shown around facilities including the salon and recreation room and some of the 58 one- and two-bedroom apartments. He spoke to residents and staff about what the home means to them and what effects the potential reforms to care and support services could have.

Mr Burstow said: “The Government supports specialised housing which specifically meets the needs and aspirations of older people, keeping them independent and active. Well-designed Extra-Care Housing – such as the scheme at Claridge House – is one of a number of ways to do this.”

Gary Day, land and planning director for McCarthy & Stone, said: “We were happy to show the minister how our schemes can really help transform the lives of our residents.

“It’s about more than just care, it’s about protecting people from declining health and supporting them to lead happier, healthier lives. Our residents enjoy their independence, safe in the knowledge that support is never far away.”
